TabLand of a million elephants, Laos is a largely undiscovered country. Only since 1988 has Laos allowed tourists to enter the country. Laos' isolation from foreign influence offers visitors an unique glimpse into traditional Southeast Asian life. A mystical land of rugged mountains, lush jungle and fertile valleys, it has so far escaped the dramatic industrial development that has gripped some of its neighbouring countries thus making it a country of true discovery and adventure.

This landlocked, sparsely populated country is located in the heart of Indochina, sharing borders with China, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The Mekong River flows between Laos and Thailand, while the scenic mountains of the Annamite Chain divides it with Vietnam. A haven for nature lovers, Laos has a thickly forested landscape as two World Heritage Sites: Luang Prabang and Vat Phou. The government is seeking the same status for the mysterious Plain of Jars.

Laos’s pristine landscape hosts a variety of flora and fauna, including rare primates, mammals and birds. Even freshwater dolphins can be found in the legendary Mekong River.

Its capital, Vientiane, is more like a big village than a crowded Asian hub and life throughout the country is slow-paced. Most people come to Laos to make a brief tour of Vientiane and Luang Prabang, but those who make the effort to venture farther will be greatly rewarded with luscious landscapes, and friendly, philosophical people.

After a turbulent past, the People's Democratic Republic of Lao is now enjoying peace, and stabilising its political and economic structures. It is one of the few Communist countries left in the world and a fascinating highlight of Southeast Asia. Tourism numbers are on the rise as more and more people discover the delights of this laid-back country.
